Startup Directory Launch Strategy
Helps the user plan and execute a coordinated launch across multiple startup directories and discovery platforms — choosing which to submit to, in what order, and how to optimize each listing for maximum visibility, backlinks, and early users.
Step 1 — Gather context
Ask the user:
-
What are you launching?
- A) SaaS / software tool
- B) Mobile app
- C) API / developer tool
- D) No-code / low-code tool
- E) Physical product or service
- F) Something else — describe it
-
What stage is your product?
- A) Idea / concept — no working product yet
- B) MVP / prototype — functional but early
- C) Launched — live with some users
- D) Growing — looking for more distribution
-
What's your primary goal?
- A) First users and feedback
- B) SEO backlinks
- C) Community visibility and social proof
- D) All of the above
-
What's your budget for paid listings?
- A) $0 — free submissions only
- B) Under $50 — can afford one or two paid options
- C) $100-500 — willing to invest in expedited/featured placements
- D) Budget is flexible — optimize for results
-
Any timing constraints?
- A) ASAP — want listings live as fast as possible
- B) Coordinating with a specific launch date
- C) No rush — steady rollout over weeks/months
If the user's request already provides most of this context, skip directly to the relevant step. Lead with your best-effort answer using reasonable assumptions (stated explicitly), then ask only the most critical 1-2 clarifying questions at the end.
Step 2 — Route or answer directly
If the request maps to a single platform, route:

Step 4 — Actionable guidance
Launch sequencing strategy
The key principle: submit to instant-listing platforms first, editorial-review platforms second, and save Product Hunt for last (when your listing is refined from feedback).
Phase 1 — Instant listings (Day 1-3)
Submit to platforms with no editorial queue to get live immediately:
- SoloPush — instant listing, no gatekeeping, solo maker community
- ProductBurst — instant listing, daily/weekly ranking opportunities
- Super Launch — instant listing, 7-day guaranteed front page (note: free backlink is nofollow)
- DevHunt — instant listing, free dofollow backlink (DR57-62), developer tools only, requires GitHub auth
- JustGotFound — instant listing, free dofollow backlink (DR23 — low but still free)
- Huzzler Launch Arena — submit Monday for weekly competition (Wed-Sun voting)
- Peerlist Launchpad — submit for Monday launch, all projects featured, streak-based vote multipliers (nofollow backlink, DR76 — community value, not SEO)
- Uneed (Skip the Line, $29.99) — choose your launch date, DR74 dofollow backlink (one of the highest free directory backlinks)
- Indie Hackers — post in relevant groups, share your story (nofollow backlink, DR75 — community value, not SEO)
Goal: Get live listings, initial backlinks, and early feedback to refine your messaging.
Phase 2 — Paid fast-track (Day 1-7)
If budget allows, pay to skip queues and guarantee backlinks:
- OpenHunts Premium ($9.90) — next-Monday launch, guaranteed DR50 dofollow backlink (cheapest guaranteed backlink)
- Open Launch Premium ($12) — next-day launch, guaranteed DR65 dofollow backlink (best DR for price)
- Fazier Lite ($19) — instant publish, homepage featuring, social media promotion (no guaranteed backlink — top 3 daily only)
- Firsto Premium ($19.90) — 24-hour launch, guaranteed DR57+ dofollow backlink + permanent SEO page
- Fazier Premium ($39) — guaranteed DR81+ dofollow backlink, 15-day promotion, premium badge (highest guaranteed DR for price)
- TinyLaunch Premium ($39) — skip queue, guaranteed DR60-71 dofollow backlink, placed between 3rd and 4th
- CtrlAlt.cc ($39) — skip 2-month queue, 1-week homepage feature
- DevHunt Featured ($49) — promoted visibility, DR57-62 dofollow backlink (developer tools only)
- MicroLaunch Pro ($39/mo) — skip queue, 2x visibility, DR59 backlink
- LaunchDay ($99) — curated 24-hour event with podcast interview + influencer promo (indie/bootstrapped only, >40% discount required)
- LaunchingNext ($99) — 1-business-day expedited review
- BetaList ($129) — skip queue for pre-launch directory
Goal: Get featured on curated platforms while momentum is building.
Phase 3 — Free editorial queues (Day 1, but goes live later)
Submit to all free editorial queues on Day 1 — they'll go live weeks/months later:
- Open Launch (free) — queue wait, conditional backlink (Top 3 + badge)
- OpenHunts (free) — ~89 week queue, conditional backlink (Top 3 weekly)
- Firsto (free) — ~180 day queue, conditional backlink (Top 3 + badge)
- CtrlAlt.cc (free) — up to 2 months wait
- MicroLaunch (free) — variable queue
- Tiny Startups (free) — weekly human curation, DR50 dofollow + newsletter exposure (17,500+ subs)
- TinyLaunch (free) — weekly launch batches, DR60-71 dofollow if Top 3
- Uneed (free) — Join the Line for automatic launch slot, DR74 dofollow backlink (highest free dofollow directory backlink after Fazier)
- Fazier (free) — 15-day review, DR81 dofollow backlink, requires badge on your site (highest DR free backlink from any first-party directory)
- Awesome Indie (free) — editorial queue, unknown wait time
- LaunchingNext (free) — weeks/months wait
- SideProjectors — editorial review, variable timing
Goal: Set-and-forget submissions that provide long-tail backlinks and discovery.
Phase 4 — Main launch event (Week 2-4)
After refining your listing based on Phase 1-3 feedback:
- Product Hunt — the main event, 24-hour window, highest stakes
- Hacker News (Show HN) — if your product is technical
Goal: Maximum traffic spike with a polished, battle-tested listing.
Listing optimization across platforms
Each platform has different listing requirements, but these principles apply everywhere:
| Element | Best practice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Clear, memorable, no jargon | First thing people see |
| Tagline | Problem-focused, under 60 chars | Drives clicks from listings |
| Description | Lead with pain point, not features | Connects with the audience's problem |
| Screenshots | Product in action, not marketing graphics | Proves the product works |
| URL | Working page with clear CTA | Converts directory traffic |
| Maker badge | Always verify/claim if available | Adds credibility |
Budget allocation guide
| Budget | Recommended allocation | Expected backlinks |
|---|---|---|
| $0 | All free submissions (10+ platforms) | 10+ backlinks over 1-3 months |
| $9.90 | OpenHunts Premium (cheapest guaranteed) | 9+ backlinks, 1 guaranteed DR50 |
| $12 | Open Launch Premium (best DR/price) | 9+ backlinks, 1 guaranteed DR65 |
| $21.90 | OpenHunts ($9.90) + Open Launch ($12) | 9+ backlinks, 2 guaranteed (DR50 + DR65) |
| $19 | Fazier Lite (instant publish, top-3 backlink) | 10+ backlinks, 1 with boosted visibility |
| $29.99 | Uneed Skip the Line (highest free DR for price) | 10+ backlinks, 1 guaranteed DR74 |
| $39 | Fazier Premium (highest guaranteed DR) | 10+ backlinks, 1 guaranteed DR81+ |
| $41.99 | Open Launch ($12) + Uneed ($29.99) | 10+ backlinks, 2 guaranteed (DR65 + DR74) |

| $90 | Above + MicroLaunch Pro ($39) | 8+ backlinks, 3 with premium placement |
| $99 | LaunchDay event (podcast + influencer promo, no guaranteed backlink) | 10+ backlinks from free subs + event exposure |
| $189 | Above + LaunchingNext expedited ($99) | 8+ backlinks, 4 with premium placement |
| $318 | Above + BetaList skip ($129) | 9+ backlinks, 5 with premium placement |
Tracking and measuring results
For each directory submission, track:
- UTM parameters: Add
?utm_source={platform}&utm_medium=directory&utm_campaign=launchto your URL - Backlink verification: Use Ahrefs, Moz, or Google Search Console to confirm dofollow backlinks appear
- Traffic: Monitor referral traffic from each directory in Google Analytics
- Conversions: Track signups/purchases by referral source
Common mistakes
- Launching on Product Hunt first. PH is highest-stakes — use smaller directories to refine your listing first.
- Copy-pasting the same description everywhere. Tailor your listing to each platform's audience and format.
- Submitting and forgetting. Directories with community features (upvoting, comments) reward engagement. Check back and respond.
- Ignoring free editorial queues. Submit to all free queues on Day 1 even if you're also paying for fast-track. The free listings provide long-tail value months later.
- Overweighting backlink DR. A DR46 backlink from a relevant directory is still valuable. Don't skip lower-DR directories — cumulative effect matters.
Gotchas
Best-effort from research — review these, especially items about plan-gated features and integration gotchas that may be outdated.
- Pricing changes. All prices listed are best-effort snapshots. MicroLaunch Pro, LaunchingNext expedited, CtrlAlt.cc paid launch, and BetaList pricing may change. Verify before purchasing.
- DR/DA numbers fluctuate. Domain ratings change over time. The rankings above are directionally correct but exact numbers may shift.
- Product Hunt is not a directory. It's a launch event. Don't treat it like the others — it requires separate preparation, community building, and timing strategy.
- "Dofollow" claims vary. Some directories report dofollow but individual listings may vary. Always verify after your listing goes live by inspecting the HTML.
- Editorial queues are unpredictable. "Up to 2 months" is a documented worst case, not a guarantee. Some platforms review faster, some slower.
- Small platforms have small traffic. Most directories in this list have modest traffic (5K-25K/mo). Set realistic expectations — directory submissions are a long-term SEO play, not an overnight traffic source.

Examples
Example 1: Plan a full multi-directory launch
User says: "I built a no-code analytics tool and want to launch it across as many directories as possible to get backlinks and early users" Skill does:
- Recommends Phase 1 instant listings: SoloPush, ProductBurst, Indie Hackers (live in hours)
- Suggests Phase 2 paid fast-track if budget allows: MicroLaunch Pro ($39), CtrlAlt.cc ($39), LaunchingNext ($99)
- Submits to all free editorial queues on Day 1 for long-tail backlinks
- Plans Product Hunt launch for Week 3 after refining listing based on feedback
- Sets up UTM tracking for each platform to measure which drives conversions Result: 10+ directory submissions with staggered timing, 7+ dofollow backlinks, and clear measurement plan
Example 2: Maximize backlinks on zero budget
User says: "I have no budget but want to get as many SEO backlinks from startup directories as possible" Skill does:
- Lists all free-submission directories sorted by backlink strength
- Starts with instant listings (SoloPush, ProductBurst) for immediate backlinks
- Submits to all free editorial queues (CtrlAlt.cc, MicroLaunch, LaunchingNext, SideProjectors)
- Recommends Show HN for high-DR free dofollow backlinks and Indie Hackers for community engagement (nofollow but highest conversion)
- Sets up Google Search Console to track when backlinks are indexed Result: 8+ dofollow backlinks from free submissions, staggered over 1-3 months
Example 3: Choose between directories for a specific product type
User says: "I built a Shopify app — which startup directories should I prioritize?" Skill does:
- Prioritizes directories where e-commerce/Shopify tools get the most traction
- Recommends ProductBurst and CtrlAlt.cc (both have strong tool/SaaS categories)
- Suggests MicroLaunch for the deals marketplace (Shopify merchants love lifetime deals)
- Adds Shopify App Store as the primary channel (not covered by this skill but critical)
- Plans Product Hunt launch timed with a Shopify app update or milestone Result: Platform-specific priority list with rationale for each recommendation
Troubleshooting
Submitted to many directories but getting no traffic
Symptom: Listed on 5+ directories but referral traffic is negligible
Cause: Most startup directories have modest traffic (5K-25K/mo). Individual referrals may be single-digit daily visitors. The value is cumulative backlinks and long-tail discovery, not immediate traffic spikes.
Solution: Shift expectations — directory submissions are an SEO play (backlinks compound over months) and social proof play (listed on X directories), not a traffic acquisition strategy. For traffic, pair with Reddit, Hacker News Show HN, and Product Hunt. Use /sales-audience-growth for high-traffic acquisition channels.
Not sure which directories to prioritize
Symptom: Overwhelmed by the number of options, limited time Cause: There are 50+ startup directories. Submitting to all of them is time-consuming and most have diminishing returns. Solution: Start with the 7 directories in the first-party skills list — they cover the range of backlink strength and models. Submit to instant-listing platforms first (takes 10 minutes each), then queue the editorial ones. If you have time for more, check the third-party platforms table. Prioritize by backlink strength and relevance to your product category.
Listings going live at random times, ruining coordinated launch
Symptom: Wanted a coordinated launch but editorial queues approved at unpredictable times Cause: Free editorial queues (CtrlAlt.cc, MicroLaunch, LaunchingNext) don't guarantee timing. Your listing may go live weeks before or after you planned. Solution: Only coordinate timing on platforms you control: instant-listing platforms (SoloPush, ProductBurst) and paid fast-track options. Treat free editorial submissions as "bonus" listings that will go live eventually. Don't plan your Product Hunt launch around when editorial queues approve you — those are independent.
