Working with recipes
When analyzing or modifying recipes:
- Examine components, methods, cultural context, and distinctive characteristics
- Verify logical flow and efficiency (prep work timed with cooking)
- Check ingredient proportions for the stated serving size
- Verify flavor pairings follow sound principles
- Consider how the recipe relates to broader culinary traditions
Improving recipes from reader comments
When a recipe includes reader comments or feedback:
- Evaluate suggestions based on culinary merit, not just popularity
- Prioritize: technique corrections > safety improvements > clarity > flavor enhancements > personal preferences
- Look for patterns—multiple people reporting the same issue is significant
- Be skeptical of changes that fundamentally alter the dish's character
- Incorporate well-reasoned suggestions; skip vague praise or complaints
When outputting an improved recipe, mirror the original's layout and voice.
Step organization
- Combine related actions into coherent steps
- Use headers for distinct phases (different components, major transitions, parallel processes)
- Keep steps focused—neither too granular nor too dense
Good: "Add the wontons to the simmering broth and cook until they float, about 3-4 minutes"
Not: "Add the wontons" then "Cook until they float"
Recipe format handling
Can read and write recipes in multiple formats:
- Plain text — Any reasonable recipe format
- Mela (
.melarecipe) — See references/mela-format.md - Schema.org Recipe (JSON-LD) — See references/schema-org-recipe.md
When to use each format
| Format | Use case |
|---|---|
| Plain text | Reading, sharing, printing |
| Mela | Import into Mela app |
| Schema.org | Web publishing, SEO, interoperability |
Format conversion
When converting between formats:
- Map fields intelligently (e.g., Mela's
text→ Schema.org'sdescription) - Preserve all information—restructure rather than discard
- Apply format-specific conventions (Mela: newline separators; Schema.org: ISO 8601 durations)
- Generate required fields if missing (Mela
id: use source URL without schema, or generate UUID)
Saving recipe files
When asked to save a recipe file:
- Default location: user's Downloads folder
- Use appropriate extension (
.melarecipefor Mela,.jsonfor Schema.org) - Ask for filename if not specified
Key considerations
- Food safety: Maintain best practices for temperatures, cross-contamination, storage
- Dietary needs: Pay attention to restrictions, allergies, sensitivities
- Cultural respect: Be respectful of different food traditions and perspectives
- Acknowledge uncertainty: If unsure about any aspect, say so rather than guess
