Why Brightcove Video Downloader
Brightcove is one of the most widely used enterprise video platforms on the web, powering embedded players on news outlets, government portals, university lecture sites, and corporate training pages. Unlike a simple MP4 link, Brightcove delivers video through an adaptive streaming architecture that splits content into segments and serves them through its own player API. There is no right-click save option, and the actual video URL is hidden behind player configuration scripts and token-gated manifests.
This makes saving a Brightcove video for offline viewing a frustrating process that typically involves inspecting network requests, piecing together stream URLs, and converting segmented files manually. Brightcove Video Downloader is being designed to automate that entire pipeline inside the browser. It will detect when a page contains a Brightcove player, resolve the best available video source, and present a simple download button so you can save the video as a single MP4 file without leaving the tab.
Planned Features
- Automatic detection of Brightcove video players on any webpage
- Resolution of underlying video source URLs from player configuration data
- Quality selection when the Brightcove player offers multiple renditions
- Direct MP4 download to your local machine with no intermediate steps
- Batch detection when a page contains more than one embedded Brightcove player
- Filename generation based on video title and metadata where available
- Browser-native workflow with no external software or command-line tools required
- Cross-browser compatibility targeting Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Firefox
How It Will Work
- Install the extension once it is released.
- Navigate to any webpage that contains an embedded Brightcove video player.
- The extension will scan the page and detect all Brightcove player instances.
- Click the extension icon to see a list of detected videos on the current page.
- Select the video you want to download from the list.
- Choose your preferred quality or resolution if multiple renditions are available.
- Click download and the extension will resolve the full video source.
- The MP4 file will be saved directly to your local downloads folder.
Expected Formats
- Input: Brightcove adaptive streams (HLS / DASH manifests delivered through the Brightcove player API)
- Output: MP4 (H.264 video with AAC audio)
Downloaded files will be saved as standard MP4 files that are compatible with virtually every media player, video editor, mobile device, and operating system.

- Does not follow unrelated links or perform actions outside the active workflow
- Limits support to the named platform, approved embedded contexts, and user-authorized sessions when required

About Brightcove
Brightcove is an enterprise video hosting and streaming platform used by businesses, news organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions to embed video players on their websites. It provides publishers with adaptive bitrate streaming, analytics, and content management but does not give end viewers any built-in option to download videos for offline use. Brightcove Video Downloader is being built to fill that gap for users who need a local copy of video content they already have access to through their browser.
